Gaining Respect

There are many times that we buy a new horse and automatically expect them to show us respect. Most of the time though that is unlikely. Although it would be simple and nice if we could earn their respect by handing them treats and spending time brushing them, this is not the way to gain their respect and more than likely they will begin to walk all over you.

In the spring of 2019, my family and I went to the Southern Ohio Horse Sale and purchased a beautiful flea-bitten grey mare. Although she is beautiful, she sure knew how to show some attitude and it was apparent she lacked some respect. After spending some time working on groundwork, she soon began to show some signs of respect and was easier to get along with.

When working with horses it is always important to ensure that you gain their respect first and foremost. Like horses, there are many times that we must gain respect from our peers to be treated as we should be. I urge all individuals whether you are horse owners or not to take the time to gain the respect of your horse or the people around you. I can without a doubt say that you will be pleased in the way that your relationship will grow and improve once the respect is gained.
