Climbing onto our horse, we put one foot in a stirrup, swing our leg over the saddle and sit upon the horse. We grab the reins and with a signal, we take off. In this moment we as humans believe that we have the control, but this is untrue. We may physically have control of the reins and the bit in the horse’s mouth, but we do not have control of their mind, and unless we establish a connection, we never will.
In order to establish and maintain this control, we must establish respect, trust, and emotional connection. Now, we will never have complete control of the horse’s mind, as they are their own being, but with trust, a horse will allow us to lead them and they will do as we ask.
I have had many horses that I did and did not have a connection with, and that is okay, but when you do establish that connection with a horse that feeling is unbeatable. For instance, my mare, Mya, and I met when I was twelve years old, I am now twenty-three. Her and I have had an unbreakable bond since. She listens and trusts me as I listen and trust her. I guide her, and in turn I allow her to guide me as I drop the reins upon her neck and let her lead the way. Our bond will never be broken.
I encourage you to build your bonds, establish connections. Start listening to your horses or the people around you if you do not have horses. You will be able to watch your bonds and connections grow. When you allow the bond to grow with your horses, you will gain control not only physically, but mentally as well.
